Atelier-Galerie A. Piroir

Gallery description

We are pleased to present the Atelier-Galerie A. Piroir, specialized in the creation and exhibition of fine art printmaking. Since 1975, we have been an intaglio printer, publisher of prints and artist’s books, and print media gallery owners. Two generations of printers work together at the studio. Alain Piroir has passed on the love for the trade to his daughter Agathe, who, after having worked on her own, joined her father in 2006. We are proud to provide Montrealers with a venue to enjoy print media.

The gallery is giving the public an exceptional opportunity to explore contemporary printmaking in its creative context. The exhibitions are presented alongside presses in the studio, where the public will be able to watch the printers and artists at work. Art lovers will be able to see the creation of a print from start to finish.

The series SCAN, a suite of triptychs and diptychs of printed felts allied with synthetic gypsum, is the latest in a work of relief printing on felt, one that draws inspiration from the heart of the body’s intimacy and vulnerability. An effort of disassociation allowed me to transcend the divided experience of a painful attack on the body and on the organs that make it breathe. Therefore a warm and natural material, felt, was chosen to be associated with synthetic gypsum, a cold and inorganic matter. Repeatedly, the artistic attempt to install a link at the border of the ruptures was at the very core of this work. Just like the experience of breathing, which is carried out through the relationship between in and out, these pieces of printed felt attempt to find a balance within oppositions (black/white – graphics/volume – softness/hardness – natural/synthetic) so that they can settle down, calm and serene.
