Purgatory Pie Press is a sanctuary for artists, designers and typographers who are seduced by the kiss of type and the touch of metal.”–Steven Heller, AIGA Journal of Graphic Design Purgatory PIe Press is one of the longest running artist/presses. Founder/printer Dikko Faust and artistic director Esther K Smith make collaborative limited editions and artist books, working with other artists and writers. Faust uses letterpress as a relief printmaking medium, hand-setting wood and metal type, and innovating plate making, both carving and working in collagraph and printing from found materials.
Exhibitions include Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum, and London's V&A. Many international museums and public institutions collect their work--from The Whitney, Cooper Hewitt, and the Brooklyn Museum, to London’s Tate and Azerbaijan’s Miniature Book Museum.
