Elana Herzog uses material culture to consider aspects of ephemerality, entropy, pleasure and pain. Her current focus is on the global migrations of culture and technology as seen through the lens of textile. In a new body of work created at Russell Janis studio, Elana cut, carved and printed plywood blocks onto textile constructions and panels, musing on the relationships between weaving and printing in textile, between surface and structure. In addition to these unique works, Elana created Recurrences 2021, a two-color wood block print on textile printed in an edition of 20.
Herzog is a Brooklyn based artist who has exhibited widely in the US and abroad. She has attended a wide range of residencies including at the MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, and the Albers Foundation. She has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Anonymous Was A Woman award, a Louis Comfort Tiffany award, a Joan Mitchell award and two NYFA artist grants.
